Layers & Reflections Workshops 

This August we have a packed programme of workshops and events with something for everyone and to suit all skills and budgets. The free workshops don't require booking but if you are coming with a party of 5 or more people please do let us know beforehand. Enjoy....

Saturday 29th July -  Butterfly Cloud Workshop 10am - 1pm Free 

Be part of the Butterfly Cloud Art Installation – create your artwork, add it to the cloud and then don’t forget to come to your launch party to receive critical acclaim and fame!  During this free workshop, you’ll decorate your own unique butterfly & see it added to the Butterfly Cloud, floating in the stairwell of Top Floor Art Gallery, showing as part of Layers Exhibition 2017. Layers launches on Thursday 3rd August at 7pm. Designed and created by Janice McHenry the Butterfly Cloud community art project was first shown in the Ulster Museum as part of Get Creative Weekend 2017. Top Floor Art are delighted to host this interactive art installation. This is a family activity suitable for all ages. Please note Top Floor Art is only accessible via a staircase, please do contact us before arriving if you have mobility difficulties.

Wednesday 9th August - Birds & Butterflies Paper Art Workshop  10 am - 1pm or 2pm - 5pm £30 per session  Book online

Create Birds and Butterflies in this fun paper art workshop, learn new techniques and leave with your own unique framed artwork.

In this fun half day workshop you’ll learn all the techniques needed to create your very own birds and butterflies framed paper artwork using recycled maps, flyers and magazines. Use collage techniques, learn to make paper beads and frame your masterpiece in a 3D box frame; perfect as a special gift for a loved one or just for yourself. All materials (including frame), required to finish your first piece are included in the price. Extra materials for further pieces will be available to buy so you make more than one and continue at home. Refreshments available during the workshop. Places are limited to 8 people per session. Suitable as a parent/guardian and child activity with children from the age of eight. There will be an opportunity to show your work in an exhibition in Saintfield Library, September 2017

Saturday 12th August - Portraits In Stitch Made Easy - 2pm - 5pm £30 Book online

In this half day workshop you’ll learn all the techniques needed to create a textile portrait. You will learn an easy method to sketch a likeness. Then using applique and embroidery techniques you will learn to embellish and decorate your sketch. All materials (including hoop), required to finish your first piece are included in the price. Extra materials for further pieces will be available to buy so you can make more than one and continue at home. This is an ideal workshop for a couple of friends keen to practice sketching each other with fabric. Refreshments available during the workshop. Places are limited to 8 people per session. Suitable as a parent/guardian and child activity with children from the age of twelve. There will be an opportunity to show your work in an exhibition in Saintfield Library, September 2017

Thursday 17th August - NI Big Sock Marathon - 10am - 4pm Free

Be part of something truly enormous! Come and learn to sew hexagons for NI Big Sock; the award winning, world record-breaking attempt to create the largest hand-sewn patchwork Christmas stocking. We're well on our way to achieving our goal, but we're not there yet and could use all the help we can get! Project coordinator Pamela Emerson, will show you how to tack and stitch your hexagons, which form the basics of English paper piecing patchwork. All supplies and craic is provided at this free, drop in event, just bring yourselves. Congratulations to NI Bick Sock community project which recently came runner-up in the 2017 national Epic Awards for excellence in the voluntary arts. Saturday 19th August - Map Butterfly Embroidery Masterclass - 10am - 5pm £50 Book online

A challenging masterclass combining paper art and hand embroidery techniques to create a stunning silk embroidered Map Butterfly. In this masterclass, you will learn the skills to manipulate paper and seamlessly incorporate it with traditional silk embroidery stitching on linen. The resulting artwork will be truly unique to you in form and significance. This is not a kit class, you will learn placement, design, technique and the ability to take your skills forward to hone your own embroidery practice. A knowledge of basic hand sewing technique is essential. All materials (including silks, linen and maps), required to finish your first piece are included in the price. Extra materials for further butterflies will be available to buy. Refreshments are included in the price but lunch can also be prebooked for an extra £5 per person. Places are limited to 6 people. £50 full price £45 concession (Students and unemployed). There will be an opportunity to show your work in an exhibition in Saintfield Library, September 2017
